I have been an illustrator for around 30 years. Don’t ask how old that makes me. I began working with ink to produce art when I was a graphic design student back in the day. At the time I could not afford oil paints, and the rotring range of rapidograph and sketch pens were being promoted to us the students. I loved Rotring and the way that their ink would sit on a nice high gram, acid free paper with a slight sheen remaining after drying from shellac carried with the ink. I was then prolific with it producing a massive body of work. My favourite tool being the rapidograph 0.35 (used to make bespoke fine art) and the Rotring sketch pen (used to draw, and draw.. and draw) which I took on the road with me everywhere I went. Over the period of the 90’s I exhibited constantly from Christchurch (in the south island of New Zealand) to Auckland (in the north island of New Zealand). During this period I met a friend and mentor who introduced me to Wacom products. I now use a Wacom Intuos 2, 24x24 tablet to produce my illustration, I recommend it. I do my drawing in Adobe Photoshop, but my primary focus remains Adobe Illustrator which I am gradually using more and more exclusively. I recommend the Phantasim CS Plug in for illustrator made by Astutegraphics. It adds vital tools like levels, hue and saturation, invert, etc. Illustrator, magic. This year I would very much like to purchase a Wacom Cintiq 12x12. If I manage to acquire this item I suspect that I will be on it all the time. I have coveted a Cintiq for some time now.
